Counties not doing enough for sports development- Mokamba

Kenyan sprinter Mike Mokamba has challenged  leaders to put more emphasize in supporting  young talent  at county level, if Kenya is to thrive further in sports sector.

Mokamba, who hails from Ikonge in Nyamira county, has lamented fruits of devolution have not been realised in sports, in most of the counties.

Recalling last summer’s Rio Olympics where athletes from Rift valley received ‘substantial’ financial support from their county governments, Mokomba said other counties should borrow a leaf from such endeavors.

“We want our leaders to mind the generation of our upcoming athletes. In the case of Nyamira, we need more training camps which the ministry of sports in the county should be spearheading.

“We have a lot of budding athletes from this region who cannot afford to travel long distances to train every time,” Mokamba told Citizen Digital.

Mokamba, who failed to participate in the Rio Olympics after sustaining a hamstring injury, has not taken part in any event this year.

“I may not be participating in any competition soon. It has not been easy but at the long last I look forward to come back stronger,” added the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) athlete.

The 23-yaer old set a national record in 100M in 2015, when he won the National Championships.
