The County Government of Meru through the ward fund has launched Ksh. 24 million sporting kits and equipment to help nurture young talents at the grassroots.

According to the County Executive Committee member for Sports Daniel Kiogora, the move will spur the enhance teams in every ward to begin participating in tournaments.

“We are looking for ways that after the ward tournaments, we can also have sub-county games so that we can form a strong team for the county. The department is also planning on how the winners can get some rewards,” said Kiogora.

Kiogora said that seven sportsmen from Meru County have been selected from the county team to join the national team for the Kenya Inter Counties Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) games who set for  Kigali, Rwanda in December.

Those selected include Benjamin Kobia and Titus Muthee in volleyball men with Caroline Kinya and Edith Kathambi joining the women team, while Tonny Kirima and Kelvin Munene will be going for football trials in Nyeri from October 30- November 2.

Others include Joseph Kobia, Joseph Njoroge and Priscilla Kanyiri who will battle it out in the darts discipline.

Kiogora said that the county government is also aiming at acquiring and improving training facilities for various sports disciplines across the county.

Meru County Assembly sports committee chairperson Evans Mawira said that 33 out of 45 wards had set aside kitty for sporting activities from the Ksh. 20 million allocated as ward development funds.

“The 33 have decided to support their youth in nurturing different talents in the county. Through sports, our youth will also keep away from drugs and enhance unity,” he said.

Meru County secretary Rufus Miriti who spoke at the county headquarters during the launch said the kits and equipment will be distributed to the wards under their representatives who will be the custodians.

“It’s the ward representatives who will spearhead this project, make sure that the replacements to be done are for those worn out and not tor the stolen items. We need proper storage so as to be able to sustain the project,” he advised.

Among the equipment and kits procured are 517 footballs, 176 volleyballs, 116 volleyball nets, 7 table tennis tables, 23 referee uniform sets, 353 football uniform sets, 307 volleyball uniform sets, socks, 5 rugby balls and trophies.
