County sets aside Ksh1.2 billion to reconstruct Mombasa stadium

Instead of upgrading the dilapidated Mombasa Municipal Stadium, the County Government of Mombasa will instead demolish and reconstruct the stadium to a new state of the art facility that meets the international standards.

Speaking to Citizen Digital in his office on Wednesday, Mombasa County Governor Ali Hassan Joho revealed that the county has already set aside Sh.1.2bilion to rebuild the over 50 -year old stadium.

According to the county boss,  work will kick off early January next year; to be completed in in 11 months with the facility set to have a sitting capacity of 15,000 fans.

“We have already completed the design and by January it will be all systems go. The work will not take more than eleven months,” said Joho adding that, “we remain committed to improving sporting standards for the people of Mombasa.”

The youthful governor said that they opted to reconstruct the facility to avoid using colossal sums in the refurbishment.

“The structures of the current stadium are old and also the design does not meet international standards and that’s why we have decided to start from the scratch,” added Joho.

Early this year, the county also opened the newly refurbished 3,000-sitter Bomu-mini Stadium which now serves as home ground for National Super League side, Modern Coast Rangers.

On Tuesday, the county in partnership with Soya founder Paul Tergat signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will see this year’s Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) ceremony held in the coastal city.
