Crash in Dar : Gor lose to Mbao, bow out of Super Cup

Kenyan Premier League giants and holders Gor Mahia were on Wednesday bundled out of the Super Cup tourney in Dar es Saalam after falling 4-3 to minnows Mbao FC in post-match penalties after a one-all-draw in regulation time.

Dennis Oliech gave Gor the lead from the spot and they looked destined for a ticket to the semis for the third successive year but the Tanzanian outfit levelled in the 79th minute through David Mwasi , to take the match to the penalty lotteries where Gor fluffed their lines.

In the ensuing penalties, Francis Kahata, Boniface Omondi and Jacques Tuyisenge converted for K’Oglao while captain Haron Shakava had his effort blocked by Mbao goalkeeper Metachi Mnata, as Shafique Batambuze crashed his effort against cross bar.

Mbao converted four of their chances, with Fredrick Odhiambo, the Gor goalie, stopping  Ibrahim Hashimu’s shot.

The outcome means that Gor will not face English Premier League side Everton, having failed to defend the trophy.

The game started with both teams squandering open scoring chances. Gor got off the mark in the 18th minute when Erisa Ssekisambu drove in a rebound only for the goal to be disallowed.

In the second half, Gor introduced Ugandan Shafique Batambuze for Geoffrey Ochieng to tighten the defence with the speedy Boniface Omondi resting George Odhiambo.

Pastory Athanas gave Gor Mahia the first second half scare with a long shot which was saved by Odhiambo in Gor’s goal in the 48th minute.

As the attacks intensified, Gor earned a corner in the 55th minute but nothing much came out of it.

Creative brain Francis Kahata was introduced with 15 minutes left, taking the place of Lawrence Juma but the Kenyan side still couldn’t find a way to breach the Mbao defence for the much needed second goal.
