Cristiano reveals secret behind Champions League win

Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that Real Madrid’s experience and maturity helped them win the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

The 31-year-old scored the decisive spot-kick in the shootout, after Juanfran missed for Atletico, to give Real Madrid their 11th Champions League trophy.

The Portuguese said he never had any doubts that he would help secure the win for Real Madrid after the match ended 1-1 in extra time with the resultant penalties ending at 5-3.

Ronaldo also admitted to being emotional after winning the trophy, and said he was pleased to right the wrongs of his last Champions League final experience in Italy in 2009.

Teammate Isco also revelled in the victory, saying he was proud of the team’s effort to keep going until the very last minute, and revealed he wants to stay at the club to help Real win more silverware.

The win gave Real Madrid their second Champions League title in three years, and their fifth since 1998.

Sergio Ramos’ first-half goal was cancelled out by Yannick Carrasco in the 79th minute, but neither team could find a winner in 120 minutes.

Real were in control early as Gareth Bale earned a free kick on the side of the box in the sixth minute.

The Welshman played the ball into the six-yard box, where Karim Benzema and Casemiro converged to redirect the ball on target, but Jan Oblak made a point-blank save.

The play was physical from the start, though English referee Mark Clattenburg kept his cards in his pocket until Dani Carvajal forced his hand with a late tackle on Griezmann in the 11th minute.

Real Madrid were in the lead four minutes later after Bale drew another foul 35 yards from goal.

Toni Kroos sent in the free kick, Bale perfectly flicked the ball on with the top of his head, and it fell for Ramos to get the crucial touch past Oblak from close range.

Atletico however equalised in the 79th minute after  Gabi lofted a ball down the right side for Juanfran, whose cross found substitute Carrasco to take the team into extra time and eventually penalties.
