Cruising Telkom keep momentum in Sliders triumph

Telkom Orange cruise to the semi-finals of the African Club Hockey Championships full of confidence after thrashing their Kenyan counterparts Kenya Sliders 4-0 in their final group stage match played at the Nairobi City Park on Thursday.

The defending champions came into the match guaranteed of a place semis spot yet Head Coach Jos Openda fielded a strong starting line-up with Omaido Audrey – fresh from her six-goal heroics against Weatherhead – once again leading the assault.

Telkom needed only eight minutes to set themselves rolling with Jacqueline Wangechi opening the scoring before Audrey Omaido doubled their lead late on to cap an excellent first half performance.

They showed no signs of easing off in the second half, with Wangechi and Omaido each finding the net once more to complete their braces and take the game beyond their hapless opponents.

Elsewhere, Ghana Police walloped Dar Ladies 10-0 but a 3-3 draw between Ghana Revenue Authority and Weatherhead meant their ruthless win failed to make a difference with the point crucially lifting their local rivals through instead.

In other matches, Egyptian women’s side Sharkia battered Weatherhead of Uganda 6-0 while Eastern (Egyptian side) defeated Wananchi (Ugandan side) 4-1.

Telkom, who topped group A will face off Heartland who finished second in group B while Kada Queens of Nigeria will play Ghana Revenue Authority in the second semi final match on Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Butali Sugar Warriors will progress to the semis after securing second place in group B as well as Ghana Police who emerged group leaders on Wednesday.

Their opponents will be decided after the final group match between Kenya Police and Exchequers of Ghana swet to be played later on Thursday.
