CS Amina Mohamed urges Kenyans to back Harambee Stars

Sports and Heritage Cabinet Secretary Ambassador Amina Mohammed has urged Kenyans to support the National team Harambee Stars as they kick off their African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2019) campaign on Sunday.

Stars will be making an appearance on the continental showpiece for the first time since 2004 and Mohammed has urged Kenyans to back their compatriots as the tournament officially kicks off tonight in Egypt.

“I know not all of us can make it to Egypt to support our team but we can follow and support them accordingly here at home by sending out messages of encouragement and at the end of it we will be happy with what they will achieve there,” said Mohammed.

Mohammed was speaking on Thursday on the sidelines of the ongoing African Games trials at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Kenya will begin her group C matches on Sunday, June 23 against Algeria, they will thereafter take on neighbours Tanzania on June 27 before winding up their preliminary matches against Senegal on July 1.

The 23-man squad under the tutelage of French head coach Sebastian Migne have already landed in Egypt after spending 19 days of training in France.

While in France, Mohammed made a surprise visit to their training base and has thus reiterated her pride as Stars take on the continent’s bests.

“We are very proud that the team (Harambee Stars) is competing at AFCON after 14 years. We have been wishing them well and we continue wishing them well,” added Mohammed

The 2019 AFCON kicks off tonight with hosts Egypt facing off with Zimbabwe at 11pm.
