Sports cabinet secretary Amina Mohammed is optimistic the good start registered by newly crowned Women’s Marathon World Champion, Ruth Chepng’etich is a sign of good things lying ahead for team Kenya.

Amina took time to visit the team’s hotel where they celebrated the Gold with a Cake, narrated how she could not get sleep early Saturday morning watching the marathon race that conclude at 02:31am EAT.

“Nobody slept at home when we were waiting for gold, and I am telling you nobody can find sleep, it feels so well when you watch it first hand,” said Amina.

“The first gold is a nice thing and a sign of good things to come, the first national anthem sung was Kenyan and the first flag that was raised was Kenyan we are aware that we came second to the USA last time but our aim is to better that performance,” she added.

She however encouraged the athletes to use the negative publicity by some foreign media portraying Kenya as a drug cheat country.

“Stories that are generated from outside our country by people who don’t even know us, they are pretending not to know that we are unpredictable and always winners, am pleased that everything they said is going to be untrue and we are not going to be caught asleep,” Amina added.

She says she believes in the current crop of athletes hence the effort to make sure all goes well.

“We believe in this young athletes and we know they rearing to go and prove themselves by showing their best as they are the future.”
