New-look Shujaa squad is a blend to watch, says Oyoo

Kenya Sevens Captain Nelson Oyoo says the stiff competition between the young and experienced players in the team is healthy not only for the coach in selecting his best, but also the unpredictability they pose to their opponents.

Oyoo who captained the team during the recent Madrid and Dubai invitational tournaments further notes the diversity is key for team development, as long as teamwork spirit remains.

Shujaa are in a critical stage of preparations ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, with coach Innocent Simiyu working to identify his squad for the summer games from his broad squad.

“The team work among the players is amazing. The support we are getting from the union is also great. You can see the hunger to improve in every game and the young players are willing to learn from the veterans. It is a great project that will bring success very soon,” Oyoo said.

The team reported to training on Sunday ahead of their invitational tournament in South Africa and the speedy winger insists they still have areas to improve on ahead of the Tokyo fiesta.

“We are getting there. It’s a process that we have to take one step at a time and these tournaments are giving us proper exposure to see which areas we have to improve on before we go to the Olympics. We we are targeting to win a medal this year,” added Oyoo.

Last week head coach Innocent Simiyu told the press that world record scorer Collins Injera was expected to join the team ahead of the South African tournament.

“We have what it takes to win the tournament in South Africa, the previous one we got closer to the main cup and it’s time to give it the last kick,” the captain offered.

Shujaa finished third in the Dubai tournament, and Injera’s inclusion is set to add more mettle into the squad going to South Africa.
