DCI recommends prosecution of FKF President Sam Nyamweya

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has recommended the prosecution of Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Sam Nyamweya and Secretary General Michael Esakwa over allegations of conspiracy to defraud, stealing by agent and fraudulent false accounting.

In a file submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko, the DCI also recommended that Acting Finance Manager Samson Cherop face similar charges.

The recommendations were made following investigations into the federation’s use of Sh17,241,824 meant for Harambee Stars trip to Cape Verde.

A stand-off between Harambee Stars players and FKF on November 16, 2015 delayed the team’s trip to Cape Verde in November where they were to play the return leg of the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers.

The team was first unwilling to depart for their return fixture against Cape Verde over unpaid allowances, with some of the international players claiming a refund of the air tickets they purchased to honour the first leg encounter in Nairobi.

After the issue was resolved, the players travelled to Wilson Airport ready to depart for Cape Verde but the trip was delayed after the owner of the airplane demanded payment before the trip.

The team, which was scheduled to travel to Cape Verde early Monday began their journey a few minutes to 8pm arriving in Cape Verde just a few hours to the match.

The Kenyan team lost the counter 2-0 cancelling out their 1-0 home win in Nairobi and ending their World Cup qualifying campaign.

The incident had infuriated Kenyans with most football fans calling for the arrest of FKF President Sam Nyamweya over the disorganisation.

Through the hashtag #ArrestNyamweya, Kenyans expressed their displeasure with the FKF boss and his management team for failing to settle the players’ arrears.

Nyamweya was later arrested by the flying squad and questioned over the Harambee Stars travel mishap though a statement from FKF stated that he had submitted himself to the police for questioning.
