Defender Otieno set to leave Gor for USA

Defender Tobias Otieno is set to be the latest player to ditch Gor Mahia FC after securing an educational scholarship to the USA where he will feature for Union Omaha in Nebraska.

Gor’s deputy secretary general Ronald Ngala says they were aware of Otieno’s plans to travel to the USA six months ago when he signed from the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions’ youth side.

The American club Union Omaha confirmed on its Twitter account it had completed the signing of the Kenyan Under-23 international.

The player could feature in his last game for Gor on Wednesday afternoon when they face basement side Chemelil Sugar at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu.

‘’We signed the player with full knowledge of his American scholarship deal and agreed to release him at the right time. He will still play football even as he continues with his education,’’ Ngala said.

His exit follows those of Francis Afriyie and Yikpe Gislain Gnamien who left the club to sign for Botswana and Tanzanian teams respectively.

It is rumoured more players are on their way out of the club due to non-payment of salaries although Ngala says they are in talks with two companies over potential scholarship deals.

‘Yesterday we had a talk with one potential sponsor are we are in talks with another today. We shall only make public the details once we strike a deal’’.

In their last KPL match before today’s in Kisumu, Gor felt the pinch of the departure of its two foreign strikers when they fell 2-1 to Kakamega Home Boyz at Bukhungu stadium in Kakamega.

The club boss also says they are waiting for the coach to return from western Kenya tour where KÓgalo has been camping before they can unveil new signings.
