Disgraced Team Manager Rotich granted bail

A Kenyan athletics coach ordered home from the Olympics after a media investigation said he demanded money to give warnings of doping tests was bailed on Friday.

Athletics team manager Michael Rotich was granted bail after a high court judge overturned a previous ruling to keep him in custody, as allegations also emerged against a second Kenyan coach.

Rotich, who was sent back to Kenya from Brazil last weekend, was filmed by Britain’s Sunday Times newspaper and German television channel ARD allegedly demanding 10,000 pounds ($13,000, 11,800 euros) for testing information.

High Court judge Luka Kimaru ruled that Rotich, 68, who suffers from diabetes, be released on medical grounds as investigators probe the allegations against him.

On Thursday, Kenya withdrew a second athletics coach from the Rio Olympics

Sprint coach John Anzrah stands accused of impersonating an athlete for a doping test.

He is alleged to have offered a urine sample in place of the country’s 800m medal hope Ferguson Rotich, who finished fourth in last year’s world championships in Beijing.

Anzrah was immediately sent home by the Kenyan Olympic Committee.

Judge Kimaru added that holding Rotich in custody for 28 days without charge as per an earlier ruling was also illegal.

He was ordered to register with police twice a week until the investigations were completed.
