Dominant Chavakali rules the roost at Secondary School Games
Chavakali Boys football under- 19 team are the new Vihiga County Secondary Schools champions after edging Ebwali Boys 1-0 in an entertaining final on Saturday at Kaimosi Friends University College( KAFUCO).
On their way to the final, Chavakali won 4-3 on post-match penalty shootouts against Vihiga Boys in a semi final that was also played on Saturday after it had been rained off yesterday.
Steveastine Singa converted a penalty kick awarded in the 48th minute after an Ebwali defender infringed on Chavakali’s tallyman Lawrence Luvanda to seal the all-important goal.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Chavakali coach Gregory Luvai attributed the win to discipline and hard work.
“My boys played well and they were disciplined all the way from group stages and their hard work has paid,”a jovial Luvai said.
Team captain Okoth Mango echoed his coach’s sentiments. “Hard work and enough training has helped us.We hope to continue with the same momentum as we proceed to the regionals,” he said.
Chavakali and Ebwali will both represent Vihiga County in the regionals scheduled to take place in Kakamega County from June 12-16. Vihiga Boys came out third while Emusire finished fourth.
Chavakali also shone in rugby, retaining the sevens aside title after smashing Vihiga Boys 19-05 in the final. Ebusiloli finished third as Nyang’ori finished fourth .The top three finishers earned the tickets to the regionals.
In the girls’ under-19 category, Mudavadi Girls were crowned champions after defeating Lusengeli 1-0 at Kaimosi Girls High School. Abigael Barasa was on the target with the all – important goal.
Mudavadi coach Ominde Edwin attributed the victory to hard work.
“We had just lost in the final of the under 16 and this made us work harder,” he said.
On her part, team’s captain Sharon Endeveli thanked her fellow players for the hard work promising the same spirit in the next level.
“We have been training hard, the team has been in good spirits and we hope to win the regional trophy,” a confident Endeveli charged.
Mudavadi Girls will represent the county in the regional championship alongside Lusengeli.
In girls under-16 final, host Kaimosi utilized their home ground advantage to emerge victorious edging Mudavadi Girls 4-2 in penalty shootout after a 0-0 in normal time.
