Double delight for Kenya on Day Two of WU20

Kenya finally struck gold at the Nairobi World Under-20 Championships in Kasarani as Day Two delivered double delight in the men’s 5000m and women’s 3000m finals.

Benson Kiplangat captured the country’s first gold medal at the event when he raced to victory in the 5000m final, crossing the finish line in a new personal best mark of 13:20.37.

He beat Ethiopia’s Tadese Worku who was seeking his second gold after winning the men’s 3000m on Wednesday.

Worku took silver in 13:20.65 with another Kenyan Levy Kibet coming home third to bag bronze also in a new personal best of 13:26.01

Kenya’s Teresia Muthoni and Zena Jemutai bagged gold and silver respectively in the women’s 3000m to round off a successful evening for the hosts.

Japan-based Muthoni secured Kenya’s second successive gold at the championships after clocking 8:57.78

Jemutai improved on her fifth finish three years ago by taking silver in 8:59.59 as Ethiopia’s Melknat Wudu closed the podium in 9:00.12

Kenya has bagged four medals at the World Junior event; two gold, a silver and a bronze.
