Down to the wire as KPA, Equity jostle for league top spot

Winners of the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) women’s Premier League regular season will be known on Wednesday as the race is tight at the top.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) are already through with their games while defending champions Equity Bank are second with one game to go, making for an engrossing end to the campaign.

After registering wins in their weekend fixtures, KPA now tops the league with 42 points from their 22 matches  matches while Equity are second with 41 points after hammering Western Delight  96-29 in a match played at Nyayo Gymnasium in Nairobi on Saturday.

It’s a win that their head coach David Maina attributes to hard work, and should Equity win their final match, they’ll emerge as winners of the regular league.

“Our defence was good but we will have to continue working on it; our offense was meanwhile very sharp with many players who could score,”said Maina.

The Bankers will face Strathmore in their last league match on Wednesday. On Saturday, KPA utilized their home advantage by crushing Tangit Sparks 103-20 at KPA Makande Gymnasium and continued their good run on Sunday smashing ANU 110-35 at the same venue.

Meanwhile, KPA men team are still not sure whether they will finish in third  or fourth position as they are currently  third placed with 38 points having completed their league matches over the weekend;  defeating Lakeside 88-54 at the KPA Makande Gymnasium in Mombasa.

The defending champions dominated all the quarters by winning19-11, 20-16, 30-15, 19-12 in the first, second, third and fourth quarter respectively.

Valentine Nyakinda was the star man in the game scoring 21 points for KPA while Ken Wachira followed him closely with 17 points, and Back Ogembo scored 12 for the Kisumu based side.

“The weekend went well after training together for a week as defense gelled well. The team’s focus is now on the Basketball Africa League qualifiers in Madagascar later this month,” KPA assistant coach who doubles up as team captain Samwel Ocholla, said.
