Driftwood Rugby Sevens series returns weekend

The Driftwood Rugby Sevens will take center stage this weekend as teams prepare to step on the fray in another round of the National Sevens Series from August 20 and 21 in Mombasa.

Kabeberi winners Resolution Impala Saracens are the top seeded side coming into this tournament and will have a repeat of their impressive performances a week ago as their primary target.

The club, ranked the top rugby club in the country, have been grouped in a tricky pool ‘A’ alongside Kabeberi Bowl winners Blak Blad RFC, Top Fry Nakuru and Division two Cup winners Makueni RFC.

Runners-up Menengai Cream Homeboyz have been grouped in Pool B alongside KCB – a side that they have beaten in two successive quarterfinals of different cup ties. The other teams in the group are Kisii and Mombasa RFC.

Homeboyz however, Menengai Cream Homeboyz and Resolution Impala Saracens are tied for points atop the National Sevens Series standings after two rounds of competition on 41 points, each having won a cup title and finished second on successive weekends, the Deejays sitting atop the charts due to a superior try count.

Homeboyz will try to put the loss to the Sarries behind them as they seek to redeem themselves on the rugby scene as a title conquest as their objective.

Driftwood Champions Mwamba RFC is set to start its title defense in Pool C with a first crunch match against Kabeberi semi-finalists Strathmore Leos followed by University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine with their final match against Menengai Oilers.

Kenya Harlequins are in Pool D together with Kabeberi plate winners Kabras Sugar RFC, Daystar Falcons and Kisumu RFC who are the other side invited to the top tier competition by the hosts.

The Strathmore Leos are seeded top in Pool C where they have a date with reigning Driftwood Sevens champions Mwamba RFC, Menengai Oilers and Mean Machine, who have been invited to feature in the division one competition by hosts Mombasa RFC.

Mwamba and Menengai Oilers have met twice in the pool stages at the Prinsloo and Kabeberi Sevens with both matches ending in 7-7 and 12-12 stalemates.
