Du Plessis drops the gauntlet as Kenya Cup season begins

Kabras Sugar RFC head coach Henley Du Plessis is aiming to win the Kenya Cup this season having finished second to KCB RFC last term.

The western based side lost 24-29 to the bankers in last season’s final under their former head coach Charles Cardovillis who recently took charge of another Kenya Cup side Kenya Harlequins.

This season they have started on high defeating newcomers Mean Machine 41-0 in a match played at the Kakamega showground last weekend.

Speaking to Citizen Digital after their match against Machine, the South African tactician said: “We are hoping to win this season because most of our players played in the finals last season.”

“This year we hope we can take it all the way…so our aim is first to identify our players and then go for the Kenya Cup.”

Kabras visit Blak Blad in their second match of the campaign to be played this Saturday at the Kenyatta University grounds.

“We want to dominate them. I have to try to explore the backs. Basically we are going to implement our plan and stick to our game,”he said.

Blad had a poor start  losing narrowly 18-15 to Impala Saracens in their opener last weekend at the Impala grounds.

“We are not going to take them lightly. We haven’t played against them under my leadership, so I’m expecting a good game from them and I expect my boys to take it positively as we did in our game against Machine.”

The 42-year-old Du Plessis, who was Currie Cup side Boland Cavaliers forwards’ coach pointed out that his main challenges this season is getting players to adapt to the new systems of play .

Kabras Sugar last won the Kenya Cup  in the 2015/16.
