The triumphant team that finished second at the 20th CAA Senior Championships was stranded for hours at Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg before securing flights for home.

The first group was supposed to arrive at 17:05 local time (+3GMT) aboard a Kenya Airways flight KQ 0761 while the second group was expected in 22:20 aboard KQ 0763.

The first group which arrived at the airport at 07:00 in the morning before they were held up at OR Tambo for 12 hours where they were joined by their colleagues since the national carrier was experiencing delays.

Both batches then boarded their flights at 18:30 for the onward journey home, exhausted but nonetheless pleased after bagging eight gold, seven silver and six bronze medals to finish behind the Caster Semenya-inspired hosts who got a gold more.

“There is nothing much we can do if Kenya Airways is experiencing delays. However they have assured me that the athletes will arrive at around nine in the evening,” Athletics Kenya (AK) president Lt. Gen (Rtd)  Jackson Tuwei said.
