EACC summons Sankok over Ksh132m Paralympics cash claims

National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) chairman, Dr. David Ole Sankok, has been summoned by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to record a statement on allegations Ksh132 million meant for the Rio 2016 Paralympics Games was misappropriated.

In a letter addressed to the EACC last week, Sankok raised alarm over misuse of the funds provided to the team by the Government and requested an independent audit investigation on the Ministry of Sports.

He has been invited by the anti-corruption body to appear before them at the Integrity Center headquarters in Nairobi on Monday.

Sankok made the extraordinary claims after returning from the Paralympic Games and compared the misuse of funds to the Rio 2016 Olympics scandal that is still under investigation

Sports Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Hassan Wario, told Citizen Digital on Thursday that he was yet to receive any updates on the progress of the Probe Committee he put in place to get to the bottom of the Rio 2016 fiasco with members still engaging athletes in Eldoret.

“The composition of Ministry of Sports was a total disgrace to our constitution because 100% of the delegation were joy riders without disabilities yet the event was for Persons with Disabilities.

“This is the worst form of corruption because allowances and opportunities meant for them were stolen by cartels who still live in dark era of marginalization and stigmatization of Persons with Disabilities,” an excerpt from Sankok’s letter to EACC read.

He also cited the discrimination and lack of proper care accorded to the team while in Rio with a number of officials supposed to be their caretakers abandoning their duties.

According to the NCPD, some of the officials were in Rio for only five days instead of the 21 days yet they claimed per diem for the entire duration and went ahead to dip into the allocated government funds to pay for their own meals and accommodation.

Despite the ungracious treatment the Paralympians were subjected to, the team went on to win six medals, three gold, two silver and a bronze.
