Echesa hails Sofapakas new signings as Rangers lurk in KPL opener

Sofapaka team manager Hillary Echesa has hailed his team’s ‘professional’ signings who were added onto the roaster for the 2019/2020 season.

The Batoto ba Mungu, champions in 2008, begin their campaign against Poster Rangers on Friday at the Narok Stadium.

The team lost key players such as Umaru Kasumba who moved to Zesco United of Zambia and Dennis Odhiambo who decamped to KCB FC.

Their exit no doubt leaves a big gap at the side.

The club, in the meantime, has signed five new players in goalkeeper Jimmy Kanakulya from Bright Stars, midfielder Mohammed Kasirye from Paidha Black Angels, Allan Katwe from Nkumba University, striker Peter Lwasa from URA FC, and defender Musa Malunda from Bul FC.

They will add on to the locals Cersidy Okeyo (Gor Mahia), Brian Nyakan, Timonah Wanyonyi (Mount Kenya United) and Philip Muchuma (Chemelil Sugar), and are expected to make their competitive debut when Kenya Premier League season begins.

Speaking ahead of the Rangers clash, Echesa said a tough task beckons for the team but is optimistic that they will be able to bag three points in the season opener match.

“The first match as we have always observed in the previous years is always a hard tussle and I am certain that we will manage a win against them (Rangers),”he told Citizen Digital.

Sofapaka who finished the 2018/2019 season at position three have their ambitions for this season much higher having brought in Portuguese coach Divaldo Alves to lead the club as the head coach.

Echesa is at the same time impressed with the performance of the new players so far in their pre-seasons matches stating that the team will be better than the last season.

“We are not stressed that we have lost key players having released them to other clubs because I am confident about these new players. When you see a club bringing in five international players it means that the team is in good condition,” he said.
