Eldonets go fourth after crushing World Hope

Eldonets moved two places up in the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) men Premier League standings after winning both their weekend matches played at the Nyayo Gymnasium.

The newly promoted side defeated KCA University 50-47 on Saturday before overcoming World Hope 75-59 on Sunday evening.

The Eldoret-based side posted some decisive plays in the opening and last quarters to claim the victory.

They won the first quarter 25-20, drew 13-13 and 16-16 in the second and third quarters before stretching out their opponents 21-10 in the final quarter.

They thus climbed into fourth on the KBF log on 26 points with four rounds of the regular season left to play.

“We didn’t qualify to the Premier League just to be participants but to win and our target is to finish in the top five in the regular league,” Eldonets head coach Maurice Ouma said.

Team captain James Ongwae attributed the win to hard work and preparation saying they played worthy competitor.

Their journey to finish in the top five teams isn’t that easy as they have to play Lakeside, Equity Bank, USIU and EMYBA.

In another men’s premier league tie, Umoja defeated Lakeside 58-50 in a hotly contested match at the same venue. The two started off with equal strength drawing 09-09 in the first quarter.

Lakeside improved in the second quarter winning 14-10 going to the halftime with a 23-19 lead.

Lakeside crumbled in the third quarter loosing 24-07 despite staging a good show in the first half. They however managed to get a win in the last quarter 20-15 but it was too late for them.

“Our strategy was to get a win here since it’s not easy to get a win in Kisumu as we plan to meet them there.” Umoja head coach Steve Kuta said after the match.
On his side Lakeside head coach John Ogilo blamed poor performance of his team for the losses.

“We are too slow in recovery, we had bad shots and turnovers, lost focus in the third quarter since we allowed them to control and they punished us for that.” Ogilo said.

Umoja moved one place up to the seventh position with 22 points with six games to go while Lakeside are third from behind with 18 points with seven games to go.
