Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge has urged Athletics Kenya (AK) to spread out national events across the country instead of hosting them exclusively in Nairobi in order attract more fans and inspire new talent.

Kipchoge’s home county of Nandi is among regions bidding to host the National Cross Country Championship early next year, an event that will also be used to select Kenya’s team for next year’s global championship in Denmark.

The World Marathon record holder was among the stars that graced the 10th Edition of the Isaiah Kiplagat Memorial Ndalaat Gaa Cross Country in Ndalaat Gaa Girls, Nandi County.

“Look at the attendance here in Ndaalat, so many fans have come here to witness this event, and I tell you many upcoming athletes get inspired by watching those who have been there before perform.

“Our villages should also have a chance to host national championships, athletes feel at home here because this is where they have nurtured their talents,” Kipchoge said.

Also in support of Nandi County to host the National championship is former 800 meters world champion Janeth Jepkosgei.

“That’s our prayer, during the 2016 Olympic trials in Eldoret, the stadium was full to capacity and bringing the cross country here it will be so nice because it’s easy for fans and the athletes,” Jepkosgei said.

“The current County government which we have in Nandi is so committed to sports and I believe can host a very successful event, this is where athletes feel at home.” She added

Uasin Gichu became the first County to host a National Athletics event when it staged the 2016 National Athletics Trials for the Olympics games in 2016.

According to AK 2018-2019 Calendar of events, Eldoret is earmarked to host the National Cross country championship cum Trials and the World Athletics Championship trials later in the year.

Aarhus, Denmark will host the IAAF World cross country championship on 30th March 2019, while Doha, Qatar will host the IAAF World Athletics Championship at the Multi purpose Khalifa Stadium between September 27 and October 6.
