England an unknown quantity in Euro 2016- Ferdinand

Ex-England defender Rio Ferdinand says the national side are an “unknown quantity” heading into Euro 2016.

England have the youngest squad of any team in France and Ferdinand thinks their fearlessness could prove beneficial.

The former Manchester United man describes captain Wayne Rooney as invaluable and insists his leadership skills will be crucial at the tournament.

The 37-year-old has backed host nation France to win the competition and feels midfielder Paul Pogba will be the star performer.

Speaking at Hublot’s Match of Friendship in Paris to mark the start of the Euros, Dutch legend Clarence Seedorf is confident world champions Germany will perform well.

Meanwhile, the Copa America is taking place in the United States and David Trezeguet believes Sergio Aguero will finish his career back in Argentina, citing Carlos Tevez as an example.

“I don’t know, they’re [England] an unknown quantity, that’s the thing that is on the end of my tongue all the time I speak about the team at the moment, you don’t know where they are. They haven’t got the experience in this tournament, but that’s good, that could lead to an amount of fearlessness and then they go out and produce, which I hope.

“He’s [Wayne Rooney] invaluable, he’s somebody who all the young players now will be looking to. There’ll be moments in that tournament, whether it’s in the training ground, whether it’s in the hotel or on the pitch, where they’ll look around and think who the hell can I look at to give me a bit of guidance, and he’s that guy. That’s why when people were saying he shouldn’t be flying over there you don’t know what you’re talking about.

“I think the German team is a fantastic team. They’re the world champions and the Germans have always shown they’re capable of replacing great players and important players for them. They start from a team mentality so I’m not worried that Germany will perform well.”

“It is a strong feeling from these players to come back to Argentina and helping Argentinian football to grow. (Carlos) Tevez already has done so; (Sergio) Aguero will do in the future. I had the opportunity to do so and it was an important feeling and a unique life experience.”
