Equity eye African Zone Five basketball success in Tanzania

Equity Bank women’s team have turned their attention on the forthcoming African Zone Five championships in Tanzania after topping the domestic premier basketball league.

Equity, who finished runners up during last year’s Zone Five tournament, will head to Tanzania in brilliant form having enjoyed a dominant season in which they have only lost one game.

The Bankers will hope to go a step better after they were stopped at the last hurdle last year when they lost to compatriots Kenya Ports Authority in the final held in Kampala, Uganda.

The club’s head coach David Maina said they learnt a lot from last year’s showpiece, adding his squad is primed to do better.

“Our aim is to win the championship. Last year being our first time but since we now know what to expect there is no reason for not performing well,” Maina told Citizen Digital.

The team will be fly to Dar es Salaam on Sunday morning ahead of the September 30 to October 10 competition.

Strathmore Blades who will also represent in the Games for the first time have set a semi-final appearance as their debut year target.

“We are well prepared for the championship especially being the first time for us we hope to do well and at least reach the semis,” Blades head coach Tony Ochieng said.

Blades will miss the services of injured star Brian Onyango while Cliff Alela and Mike Oketch have requested to be left out.
