Equity Hawks train eyes on Zone Five after league heroics

After winning the national title, new women basketball league champions Equity Bank are now eyeing the African Zone Five Championship title set for next year.

Equity were crowned the 2018 champions on Sunday after defeating holders Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) 3-1 in the best of five series, and are targeting to defend the title they won in this year’s edition held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Speaking to Citizen Digital  in Nairobi after being crowned the champions, head coach David Maina said they will have early preparations to be able to defend the title.

“Definitely we will have to start early preparation knowing that now we are known outside there. We will not just go to participate but come back with the trophy,” Maina said.

His sentiments were seconded by team captain Joyce Nabwire who said they are looking forward to exerting their influence in the championship.

At this year’s Zone Five Championship held in Dar es Salaam,Tanzania, the bankers’emerged winners after humiliating then holders and compatriots KPA 70-54 in the last game of roundrobin.

Equity won all the five matches with other wins coming from defeating UCU of Uganda 71-57, JKT of Tanzania  69-48, APR of Rwanda 70-46, and Welkite of Ethiopia 70-54 to win the title.

Meanwhile, KPA are not ready to sit back and let Equity run the rule in the competition as they also plan to put their best foot forward.

“We will be back much stronger to take what belongs to us; mark my words,” KPA head coach Antony Ojukwu said after the defeat to Equity in Sunday’s final.

Other teams that will represent the country in Zone Five Championships include KPA men team and Ulinzi Warriors.

The four will represent Kenya in the Africa Zone Five series that will comprise clubs from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Egypt and Somalia.
