Equity, Storms coaches laud Basketball Battlefield tourney

Equity Hawks head coach David Maina says the Basketball Battlefield Queens‘ (TBN) Edition basketball tournament played over the weekend was important for his fringe players.

The Bankers competed against five other top-flight clubs and they emerged the champions after defeating Zetech 33-31 in the final.

“There are some players we needed to give them more playing time and they were up to the games because for me they played so well, you could see they were so determined to make a name.”

“It’s a bit unfortunate some of them don’t get playing time in league matches and they proved that they are ready for the task,” he said.

Storms head coach Abel Nson, who is also the Kenya Morans assistant, says despite not winning the tournament it was a huge success and they look forward to next year’s edition.

“It was a huge success in this first edition even if it was on short notice. We saw a great display from the ladies and both the sponsors and those who were watching were entertained and we hope next time will be a bit longer and that we will perform better,” Nson said.

The winners went home with Sh100,000 with runners up getting Sh50,000. The third and fourth-placed finishers pocketed Sh25,000 each.

The tournament was organized by the Africa Guarantee Fund in conjunction with the Kenya Basketball Federation and held at the Nyayo Gymnasium and Strathmore University Grounds on Saturday.

The six teams that competed were Eagle Wings, Zetech, Storms, Strathmore, Equity Hawks and UON Dynamites.

The tournament was due on March 8 to celebrate International Women’s Day but was called off as the country was under lockdown at the time.
