Europe-bound Starlets back in camp on Sunday

The Harambee Starlets journey to this year’s Africa Women’s Cup of National (Awcon) finals begins this weekend when the girls reports to camp at Nairobi’s Safaricom Stadium in Kasarani before flying out for two weeks to Europe for a series of friendlies.

Head coach David Ouma who led the team to the Yaounde, Cameroon finals where ten African countries will vie for continental honours said they were looking forward to be ready for their maiden tournament.

“We have already agreed with the Football Kenya Federation that we shall leave for Spain on July 28 and training will start on Monday and go on for nine days before we leave for the Kotis International Tournament,” the tactician told Citizen Digital.

The team will feature in the competition that kicks-off on June 30 before moving to Germany for further training with Ouma calling on the federation to organise more games against top European sides during their training tour.

Starlets report to the camp on a high after thrashing neighbours Uganda 4-0 in a friendly in Nairobi with Ouma bullish the girls will return from Germany ready to take on the best in Africa.

“We managed to keep a clean sheet against Uganda but I want to tighten the midfield and get a creative number 10. So far I have a shaky central defense which I’m working on as the players in the position currently are good but back in defense we are losing,” Ouma who is also the coach of Kenyan Premier League basement side, Sofapaka FC told.

Kenya is pooled in Group B of the finals against continental giants Nigeria, Egypt and Zimbabwe after sealing their historic qualification when they toppled Algeria on the away goal rule after a 3-3 tie on aggregate (away 2-2, home 1-1) in their last two-legged knockout qualifier.
