Shujaa Technical Director Paul Feeney has named the 18-man Kenya Sevens squad for the 2019/2020 HSBC World Rugby Sevens series which kicks off with the Dubai Sevens next month.

Speaking during the unveiling of Shujaa’s squad, Feeney said he was spoilt for choices after a great performance in the 2020 Olympics qualifiers.

“All the players played as a team in the qualifiers eyeing our target of qualification and after getting the ticket to the Tokyo Olympics we now shift focus to the HSBC series. I’m spoilt of choices,” said Feeney.

The squad is a blend of experienced and young players led by captain Andrew Amonde, assistant captains Jacob Ojee and Jeffrey Oluoch, Kenya’s top try scorer in the HSBC Collins Injera and Willy Ambaka with Amonde expecting a competitive season.

“We’ve just picked from where we left after the Olympics qualifiers because we knew the task ahead of us was not easy.  We’re now preparing for the IRB circuit where we get tested every year and I think that’s a challenge for us,” explained Amonde.

Dubai sevens will be played from the December 5-7 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Feeney who hails from New Zealand eyes a top eight finish this season after finishing 13th with 37 points last year.

The highest number Kenya has ever finished is fifth under the current USA head coach Mike Friday in 2013 with 99 points.
