Fierce fight in NSL as top guns aim at KPL ticket

The race for promotion to Kenya Premier League (KPL) has taken a new twist as Ushuru FC leapfrogged Vihiga United to go second in the National Super League NSL, as the race heads to the wire.

The tax men beat  Police FC 2-0 to move second on the log with 66 points, only trailing league leaders KCB by a solitary point with only five points separating the top five teams.

On the same vein, Vihiga responded to their 1-0 loss to KCB by edging out a resilient Talanta by a single goal although they remain third on the log on 65 points despite having played one more game compared to the top two teams.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Vihiga United assistant coach Francis Xavier bemoaned the tough sides his team has recently faced.

Xavier believes that it is the tough fixture run which has made them drop points. He has however vowed to march on.

“We have been encountering tough teams and that’s why we have dropped from the first position .All we need now is to work hard so that we can realise our ambition of featuring in the KPL next season,” said Xavier.

Vihiga’s next assignment will be against former KPL outfit Nairobi City Stars who are now seventh on the log after registering a 1-0 win over the relegation-bound Mosca, and Xavier is optimistic his charges are good enough to earn the three points.

“We are meeting City Stars next Tuesday and it’s my hope that we beat them so that we keep our dreams on. We have a good team which we are looking upon to achieve all this,” added Xavier.

Top spot

Meanwhile, KCB are not looking to relinquish the top spot anytime soon as they defeated Bidco United 2-0 to continue with their charge for the ultimate prize. The win hauled their points tally to 67.

At the bottom of the table, the fight for survival is also taking shape as only five points separate the six teams between position 13 and position 19.
