FIFA clears five candidates to run for presidency

FIFA have confirmed Prince Ali bin al Hussein, Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim al Khalifa, Gianni Infantino, Tokyo Sexwale and Jerome Champagne will stand as the final five candidates in next month’s presidential election.

Tuesday’s announcement comes exactly one month before the extraordinary congress meeting in Zurich takes place, where Sepp Blatter’s successor will be revealed.

Earlier this week Head of the Asian Football Confederation, Sheikh Salman hinted at appointing English Premier League CEO Richard Scudamore, and Alex Ferguson as advisors if he is succesful in his bid.

While UEFA general secretary Infantino also has a strong European following and also appears to have won over the Central American Football Union with president Rafael Tinocco pledging the support of all seven nations.

Prince Ali, a former FIFA vice-president and president of the Jordanian Football Association, will be hoping it’s second time lucky after being defeated by Blatter in last year’s election.

Meanwhile Champagne, spent over a decade working within FIFA before being fired as director of international relations in January 2010 following mounting pressure on Blatter.

Disgraced outgoing president Blatter and former UEFA head Michel Platini where taken out of the running late last year after being barred from having any involvement in football for eight years.

The punishment handed down by FIFA’s ethics committee after investigating an alleged ‘disployal payment’ of two million Swiss Francs made in 2011.
