FIFA releases new presidential elections dates

World football governing body FIFA has announced new dates for the next presidential election.

In a meeting held in Zurich, Switzerland on Monday, the officials announced that the election date will be on February 26th, 2016.

The new vote date leaves current FIFA President Sepp Blatter with almost nine months between his promise to step down and the election to decide on his successor.

None of the regional leaders are yet candidates for the election. UEFA President, Frenchman Michel Platini, 60, is considering a run.

Candidates will have until October 26th to announce whether they plan to stand under the FIFA election rules.

Key questions remain over the integrity of the election process and over FIFA as a whole. The election offers FIFA a chance to change direction but not everyone is convinced.

“I think you’ll find that they are going to come up with some quasi reforms. They are going to try and shift the deckchairs around the Titanic. They are going to try to show some notion of reform but it is not what this organization requires,” said Jaimie Fuller, member of an organization “New FIFA Now.”

Two separate investigations continue to probe FIFA affairs. Although FIFA is in the process of implementing further organizational reforms, even key sponsors are calling for the organization to go further.

“If we don’t use this chance now and truly bring in proper reforms that are driven independently and externally to a degree, if we leave it to these guys in FIFA, if we let them reform themselves, we will miss the opportunity,” said Fuller.

Current FIFA President Sepp Blatter was re-elected to a fifth term on May 29th, just two days after Webb and six other FIFA officials were arrested in a raid on the luxury Zurich hotel where the election was held.
