Fit-again Amonde glad to be back for Shujaa

Kenyan international Andrew Amonde says he is happy to link up with his teammates following a four-month long injury lay-off that ruled him out of the opening and second legs of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

The KCB RFC flanker has returned to full training and will be in contention for a spot in head coach Innocent Simiyu’s squad for the third and fourth rounds of the global Sevens circuit in Sydney and Hamilton.

“The camp is in good atmosphere and every player is trying to achieve individual target so we can get a good team to represent the country,” he said.

Others who returned to the team training include Shujaas top try scorer and winger Collins Injera and Billy Odhiambo but are not expected back until the fifth and sixth round.

Amonde’s return serves as a timely boost for the Shujaa as they step up preparations for the Sydney sevens that will be played on January 26 in Australia.

Simiyu’s men have been handed a tough draw in Pool B where they are set to play alongside Cape Town finalists Argentina, France and the in-form Wales.

“It’s not an easy pool so we need to play well as a team so that we get good points which will help us go forward,” Amonde said.

He added the Shujaa will be targeting a place in the Main Cup finals.

Kenya remains 11th on the series standings with 13 points after collecting 10 points in Dubai 7’s and 3 points in Cape Town 7’s.
