FKF announces multi-million broadcast deal

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa has announced a seven-year broadcast deal with Chinese pay television company StarTimes.

The deal, worth Sh836m, also includes airing matches for Kenya’s top two football divisions as well as the men and women national teams, FKF president Nick Mwendwa said on Tuesday.

“FKFPL (is) back on TV!! (the) 7-year deal, 1.1 million dollars a year including national teams men and women, NSL 30 matches,” tweeted the FKF boss.

According to Mwendwa, the first match to be beamed live under the deal is the international friendly when Harambee Stars hosts Zambia on October 10, as part of preparations for the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

“And Harambee Stars opens the show with Zambia on 10th October. Football is back bigger and better,” he posted on his official Twitter account.

The multi-million sponsorship deal comes just months after the federation secured a Sh. 1.2 billion title sponsorship for the FKF Premier League, with an online betting firm from Nigeria.

Citizen Digital understands the official unveiling of the two sponsorships will take place before the kick-off of the new season, which has been delayed owing to the prevailing Covid-19 situation in the country.

After the exit of Super Sport in 2017, Kenya’s topflight has been without a broadcast partner.
