FKF boss Mwendwa adamant KPL promotion playoffs on

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa has brushed off claims there will be no Kenyan Premier League (KPL) promotion play-offs.

The FKF boss reiterated the matter that only resurfaced towards the close of the season was already a closed discussion and that dates had even been set.

The KPL management have in recent weeks denounced the idea, maintaining they will uphold the original format of automatic relegation/promotion with the top two teams in the National Super League (NSL) replacing teams dropped from the KPL.

“The playoffs will be played on December 2 and 6, with a coin toss determining who plays first at home. It is not a new thing, and teams were aware of the rule long before the end of the season,” the FKF boss said in an interview with a local broadcaster.

The scenario would give Ushuru FC a lifeline to the top flight as they prepare a potential clash against Thika United in a two-legged affair that would decide the final KPL team for next season.

Going by the current rulebook, NSL winners Vihiga United and first runners-up Wazito FC will play in the top flight next season with Muhoroni Youth and Western Stima dropping to the second-tier.

Thika, who finished 16th on the KPL log and Ushuru, who finished third in the NSL are thus waiting on a final announcement from the two bodies.

Sources privy to Citizen Digital intimated the KPL executive council will convene on Wednesday to deliberate on the matter.
