FKF hoping to get top-tier league started by Nov. 6: Mwendwa
Football Kenya Federation President Nick Mwendwa says he's hoping to have the top-tier football league begin by November 6.
Speaking moments after the re-opening of Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi Saturday, Mwendwa said that they have contacted the Ministry of Sports to allow the league and football to go on from November.
Initially, Mwendwa said he hoped for an October restart but this has been made impossible by the government’s recent directive on contact-sports further ban.
Mwendwa’s desire to have football return got a further boost from President Uhuru Kenyatta who in his speech tasked Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed to fast track the resumption of other sports barely a fortnight after outlining guidelines of non-contact sports resumption.
“We were targeting October 23 to start our league but now at least November 6 or 7 will work for us,” said Mwendwa.
Mwendwa also stated that they are planning to use the refurbished Nyayo stadium for the opening match of the FKF Premier League.
The stadium will also host Harambee Stars two friendly matches next month against Zambia and Sudan.
“We want to use this stadium for the opening ceremony match of the league but will also have Stars against Zambia and Sudan matches as we prepare to face Comoros in a two-leg clash”.
Nick who will be on the ballot to defend his seat next month in the Football Kenya Federation national elections has also termed the Kenya Premier League Limited as a ”past story” noting that they are now looking forward to running the league through the transition committee as they target more sponsors to bolster the local league.
“KPL story has ended. We are on another stage and you will see a new sponsor and the league on TV soon and KPL is gone my friends,”he charged.
The Premier League play-off match between Kisumu Allstars and Vihiga United was scheduled for 7th October and it remains unclear if it will go on or be rescheduled.
