FKF in unprecedented Mafro Sports kits deal

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa termed the partnership with Mafro Sports an ‘unprecedented’ milestone as the outfit were showcased on Monday.

Their three-year partnership is worth KSh74m  with the sports apparel firm set to supply playing and training kit to the national football teams.

The Mafro Sports brand will also be worn by all teams that operate under the national federation.

A band of local based players will enjoy the privilege of dorning the outfit first when the Harambee Stars host Angola in a friendly match at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

The deal will see Mafro Sports supply 600 pieces for all teams on the national level with the home kit being red in colour. White kits will be used for away games and green as the alternate.

“We spent Ksh18m in purchasing uniforms for our teams. Now Mafro comes on board, to pay us for wearing their product. The money we were spending on kits can now go to other important business.

“We came into office and found more than three kit deals that were not official so we had to settle on one kit provider. With this deal, KSh57m will be for kit manufacturing while the other cash will now be paid to us football projects,” Mwendwa offered.

FKF CEO Robert Muthomi revealed they had explored seven other options before sealing the partnership with Mafro Sports.

“When we took the office, we promised an official kit but it has not been easy to get a partner. We talked to seven different firms before we finally settled on Mafro. Some were unwilling, others came with low deals,” Mothomi said.

Mafro Sports Managing Director Mahmoud Gondha said the Kenyan team suited their plan and it was a good platform to grow their product in Kenya.

“Mafro was designed to suit the thirst of the African nation and we at Mafro felt we could give a taste that suited them. We have been in negotiations with FKF for some time now and we are happy that the Kenyan federation agreed the deal.”

The partnership comes as a replacement for the Uhlsports jerseys that the national teams have been using since Mwendwa came into office in February 2016.

Mafro Sports are the official kit sponsors for the Zambia and the Zimbabwe national teams.

Meanwhile, Haron Koech, representing the Sports Cabinet Secretary Dr. Hassan Wario in the event, said the government is on the verge of having an official kit for all national teams.

According to Koech, the ministry aims at having specific national colors while the design may vary.
