Footballers pile pressure for Sport return as vaccination exercise continues

Football Kenya Federation Premier League players have called on the government through the Ministry of Sports to speed up the process of resumption of top-flight football.

Led by Gor Mahia captain Harun Shakava, the players want the government to allow football return after getting the Covid-19 jab at the weekend.

“We only depend on football in our lives so when it is suspended it shows that we have nothing to earn thus we urge the government to ease the restrictions,” appealed Shakava.

The former Nkana FC defender has at the same time assured their supporters that Gor Mahia are still in the race for the title and will fight to be bitter end once the league resumes.

“We had defeated Bidco in our last match and our form was coming back after a poor start to the league,” he explained.

His sentiments were echoed by Wazito FC defender Johnstone Omurwa who said the suspension of Sports has ‘killed’ their momentum and the bond which Coach Francis Kimanzi had already built in camp.

“We had already formed a good pattern among our squad but now is just time wasted because we will have to start from the scratch for a second time,” lamented the Harambee Stars defender.

Already 11 Nairobi based teams have received the vaccine with the remaining 7 teams outside the capital city scheduled to be vaccinated within this week.

FKF President Nick Mwendwa on his part said that once the process of vaccinating all stakeholders in the league is concluded this week, they will ask the government to allow them to resume the league from April 24.

“We hope the government will allow us to go back to the field with all measures observed so as to prepare our national teams for World Cup qualifications; both Harambee Stars and Starlets,” said Mwendwa.

Other discipline federations are also in the process of vaccinating their players and officials so as to have their sports resume.
