Former Everton Manager passes on

Former Everton Manager Howard Kendall has died.

Kendall was Everton Manager, through three spells between 1981 to 1987, 1990 to 1993 and 1997 to 1998.

During his time at Everton, also known as the Toffees, Kendall won the FA Cup in 1984 before winning the league title in 1985 and 1987. He also claimed the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1985, as well as reaching two FA Cup finals.

He shot to fame during his time as Preston North End player before his transfer to Everton where he made over 200 appearances as a midfielder.

Kendall later moved to Birmingham, Stoke and Blackburn before starting a managerial career.

He left Everton in 1987 to take charge of Athletic Bilbao before further spells at Manchester City, Xanthi, Everton, Xanthi, Notts County, Sheffield United, back at Everton and Ethnikos Piraeus.

Kendall died today at the age of 69.

Several sports personalities have sent their condolences, among them former player Gary Lineker.

In his Twitter post Gary said: “Saddened to hear that Howard Kendall has passed away. Brilliantly managed the best club side I ever played for at Everton. Great bloke #RIP”.

Former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher, who also played for Everton at one point in his career, described Kendall as the one who gave him his best football memories.

He said: “RIP Howard Kendall the greatest EFC manager there’s been. He gave me some of my best football memories especially in the 84/85 season.”

In line with the saddening incident, it is expected, as custom, that there will be a minute of silence before the start of the match between Manchester United and Everton on Saturday.
