Former FKF boss Nyamweya in alleged theft of KSh2.5m

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Aberdares branch Chairman Davis Chege has accused former federation boss Sam Nyamweya and a local bank of colluding to misappropriate KSh2.5m meant for sports development in the region.

According to Chege, the money – a donation from Kiambu County Government – was deposited to FKF’s bank accounts in September last year before they were inexplicably withdrawn despite prior requests by Chege demanding that the accounts be frozen.

“We wrote to the bank demanding that no transaction should take place without our consent.  We only later learnt that the money had been withdrawn so our next step was to report the matter to the police.

“We have around 100 clubs which require funds to run and we want our money back,” Chege demanded.

In response, Nyamweya admitted having withdrawn the funds albeit not on his own volition as ‘unpaid federation employees’ requested his intervention in helping access the funds.

“Those allegations are unfounded, I was only requested by the federation employees who had not been paid for long to assist them get the money, because I was a signatory until the end of the year.

“None of the money came to me directly as it was all for the employees. It is my view employees should be paid because they also worked even under me,” Nyamweya told Citizen Digital.

Nyamweya accused the current FKF office for failing to engage him in the transfer of bank signatories and opting to open new bank accounts when Nick Mwendwa came into power in February last year.

“You can’t change the signatories of a body without going with them together to execute it in the bank. Until last year November we used to coordinate well in terms of the money in the accounts.

“I told Robert Muthomi (FKF CEO) that I do not want to continue handling the accounts because the handing over process was taking too long.

“I have never refused to hand over in terms of changing my status as a signatory thus the incoming office is to blame for failing to take the initiative,” Nyamweya added, while reiterating his willingness to cooperate.

Nyamweya seemed to brush it all off as down as a mere ‘technical’ hitch, citing his past experiences as the federation’s head.

“My predecessor, Mohamed Hatimy, took a long time before handing over to me and during that time he kept on handling money transactions.

“Also, when the current office says they found empty accounts they need to remember when you take over an organization you inherit its assets as well as liabilities.”
