Four-goal hero Jow gets Telkom off the mark in Accra

Africa Cup for Club Championships holders Telkom Kenya began their title defence on a high as they humbled Yobe Desert Queens of Nigeria 5-0 on opening day of the annual tournament at the Theodosiah Okoh Hockey Stadium in Accra, Ghana.

Telkom who were recently crowned Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Premier League champions for a record 20th time dominated the proceedings from the start to end with Lucy Jow in the best form of her life as she managed to plunder four on her own.

Jow scored the first goal in the 10th minute before adding the second in the 44th minute with Audery Amooh claiming the third goal.

In the final 10 minutes, Jow once again showcased her class as he added the fourth one at the 52nd minute before finishing the goal feast at the stoppage time.

The win now puts the Champions in the driving seat as they are on course for a 10th title in the Championships.

Another Kenyan representative in the tournament Strathmore University Scorpions had contrasting fortunes as they were thrashed 4-0 by hosts Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) women.

The students conceded goals from GRA’s Grant Monica and Fosua Emelia in the second quarter before Vivian Narkuor and Enerstina Coffie completed the scoring in the fourth quarter to hand the host a positive start as they battle to keep the title at their home soil.

The two Kenyan sides will now come up against each other on Sunday in their second match of the tournament which is being played on a round- robin format.

In another women match played today, host club Ghana Police trounced another West African side KADA Queens of Nigeria 4-1.

In the corresponding men matches, defending Champions Eastern Company Club of Egypt began their campaign on winning ways as they hammered Police Machine of Nigeria 3-1.

Two more matches are however scheduled to take place tonight after the official ceremony where Ghana’s SSNIT (Trustees) face Niger Flickers of Nigeria and later on Egyptian giants El Sharkia will be up against another home side, GRA men.

The annual competition runs from 20-27 January.
