France stifle Uruguay to reach World Cup semis

France became the first team to reach the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup when they defeated Uruguay 2-0 in a feisty clash at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium in Russia.

France led Uruguay 1-0 at halftime of the first quarter-final of the World Cup on Friday after Raphael Varane glanced in a superb header from an Antoine Griezmann free kick five minutes before the break.

Uruguay, without injured striker Edinson Cavani, had started full of running and were close to equalising with a great header by Martin Caceres but France were on course to meet either Brazil or Belgium in the semi-finals.

France then doubled their lead courtesy of a howler from Fernando Muslera in the Uruguay goal.

After Paul Pogba had outmuscled Vecino and powered up the field, Antoine Griezmann found the ball at his feet on the edge of the Uruguay penalty area.

He tried a shot, which Muslera had covered. Trying to parry instead of catch the ball, the goalkeeper could only watch in horror as it slipped through his hands and dropped over the line.
