Gambling All Stars pick Arthur Opiyo as Ominos replacement

Relegation threatened Kisumu All Stars has picked little known Arthur Opiyo as a replacement of sacked coach Henry Omino.

Omino lost his job at the weekend after struggling All Stars soaked four goals to no reply against Kakamega Homeboyz at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.

The defeat, their eleventh loss of the season, left them placed at position 16 with eight points from 15 matches, just one spot above bottom placed Chemelil Sugar.

Bizarrely, rather than cure the team’s Archilles Heel – lack of payment of player salaries – the team management opted to make Omino the sacrificial lamb

In making the changes, the team’s board of directors  also fired  assistant coach Andrew Aroka and goalkeeper trainer Joseph Ongoro.

The team’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nicholas Ochieng who announced the changes says little known Arthur Opiyo will forthwith take the responsibility for the first team as an interim head coach for a period of one month.

“Our sincere thanks go to Omino(Henry) and his colleagues who made unrelenting efforts to the club,” Ochieng said.

Ochieng says Francis Oduor will in the meantime step in as an assistant coach for the team which faces Tusker tomorrow in a KPL match.

He says the changes in technical bench was necessary because of the poor results displayed by the team and the current position in the league table.

“We have got enough talent in the team after we bolstered our squad yet the results don’t show for it,” he added.

He says the club board of directors will embark on a recruitment process for a new head coach within a period of one month, adding that they are already receiving CVs for interested applicants and shall be evaluated and a right decision will be made to pick Omino’s successor.

Speaking to journalists in Kisumu, Ochieng confirmed that they also intend to strengthen the team and are planning to add more players.

“We want to add players especially strikers and defenders to ensure we remain competitive,” he says.

Ochieng further admitted that the management and the county have failed the players in terms of salaries and allowances which the fans have attributed to the poor performance and low player morale.

“The financial woes in the team are true and I must say we have failed the boys but that may come to an end soon after a personal commitment by Governor Anyang Nyongo,” said Ochieng.

In November last year, the players signed their contracts with the county government of Kisumu which was expected to end the long period of suffering.

County Sports Chief Officer Thomas Ouko who issued the contracts said all the 14 former players from the NSL and the 13 new players who were recruited as the team got promoted were now employees of the county through the county public service board.

Early last month, the team also acquired two new sets of kits from the county government which included an orange kit to be donned during their away matches.

The team however retained their blue kits for their home matches while another set of black kits will be their alternative uniform.

Kisumu All Stars is currently placed 16th in the KPL log with eight points after having won two, drawn two, and lost 11 matches of the 15 games played.
