Gaspo fight back to edge Kibera Girls in WPL

Gaspo Youth FC continued their assault on the Kenya Women Premier League top spot with a 2-1 win over Kibera Girls Soccer Academy at the Stima Club Grounds in Nairobi on Sunday.

What had looked certain to be a low-scoring match exploded in the second half with substitute Siliya Lumasid finding the back of the net five minutes after coming on to spark the goal-scoring.

Gaspo were only behind for five minutes with Wineate Kaauri heading home to pull them level before Elizabeth Mutukiza found the winner with only eight minutes left on the clock.

By then Kibera had a numerical advantage after Leah Cherotich was sent off in the 65th minute for a dangerous tackle yet they failed to exploit it.

Pauline Muthakye’s superb performance between the sticks was the only positive for Kibera with the goalkeeper making several impressive stops including a fierce long range attempt from Vivian Corazone.

Kibera Soccer Academy had a great chance to put themselves in front after Damaris Achayo slipped through the defenders, and remained only with the goalkeeper but was denied a goal as it fell right into Vivian Akinyi’s arms.

Mutukiza managed to score the second goal in the 82nd minute to put Gaspo ]in font after starting her run from the right-wing right to the 18-yard box, her shot could not be stopped by Muthakye.

Gaspo remain third with 38 points, joint with Trans Nzoia Falcons who are at position two behind leaders Vihiga Queen After a 2-1 win against Kisumu all starlets on Saturday at the Moi Stadium, Kisumu.
