On their way to the finals, Gatunga knocked out Eastern Region champions Kangundo High School in the quarterfinals with a 3-0 win, and the bullish tactician believes it will now be more easier for him to win the national title.

“Having knocked out the defending champions we knew this was the perfect opportunity to challenge ourselves and showcase our prowess for the top spot. Our main target now is to qualify for the East Africa Games and hopefully,  silence the naysayers,”Kiragu added.

In the playoffs, St Martin from Makueni emerged victorious, scooping third place in the overall standings after a 3-1 win ;(25-20) (25-23), (23-25), (25-23) against Mutewa Boys High School.

In the girls category, titans Kwanthanze took a huge stride in their journey to the East African Secondary School Games set for Rwanda after edging out Kyatune Girls 3-0 in a lopsided final of the Eastern Region Term Two B Games in Kitui.

Kwanthaze, who sent shock waves when they clinched the East African title back in 2015, now proceed to the nationals  bidding to reclaim the crown they relinquished last year.

On their way to the finals, the 2015 Metropolitan champions eased past Chatune Girls (3-0) in the quarters before driving through Chogoria Girls by a similar margin in the semis.

“I am proud of what we have been able to achieve this year. Things can only get better for our teams; I think this time we will stun our opponents in Eldoret,” Kwanthaze head coach Justin Kigwari told Citizen Digital in a post-match interview.
