Gesero on the brink of semis after a bright start

Nyanza Region, 2018 Secondary Schools soccer under-19 boys’ defending champions St Charles Lwanga Gesero, are on the brink of qualifying for the semifinals of this year’s edition after collecting four points in the opening day at Kisumu Day grounds.

The Tsunami shared spoils against Awasi Boys in their opening after a 0-0 stalemate and pounced on defensive flaws to beat a resilient Kodero Bara side 2-1.

Their goalkeeper Muslay Omwoyo proved pivotal to their promising start after he saved from the spot in the second half to keep game scoreless in their opening game.

Their second game seemed headed in the same direction as ended scoreless in the first half.

However, two quick-fire goals by skipper Vincent Angwenyi Clinton Nyaata alias Nasri at the start of the second half put them ahead to ease the pressure.

Kodero Bara converted from a free kick later on, but it proved to be a consolation as Gesero held on to prevail.

Speaking to Citizen Digital Gesero assistant Coach, Vincent Oroko praised his players for staying true to their bid as defending champions.

“We drew against Awasi, which was a strong team, and again we won our second game against Kodero Bara and am glad the boys played to their strengths.

We failed to play according to our game plan because we came up against teams that we are not well acquainted with.

But we will grow as the tournament progresses.” He said.

Mr, Oroko said his charges do not feel the pressure of being defending regional champions, and urged them to get the all-important victory against Tom Mboya in their final game.

“No pressure at all. We have to win the remaining game against Tom Mboya.” He added.

His defenders are the lynchpin of the team, and they proved indispensable in their crucial victory over Kodero Bara.

“Am delighted that we managed to stop their very tricky wingers. I want the boys to remain confident, and we will make it to the semis.” He observed.

Elsewhere regional powerhouses Nyakach Girls were in their scoring best after they trounced minnows St Mathias Mulumba from Nyamira county 11-0 to record the biggest scoring margin in this year’s edition.

Nyakach Girls head coach Chrispine Odindo lauded his charges for putting on a good display.

“We hoped to display a good game, so as a coach, I expected them to attach more.

Generally, I can say that we failed to convert the many chances that came our way. We will work on this dimension as a way of overcoming the stiff competition that we will face as we progress.” He asserted.

The games resume on Friday with semifinal berths up for grabs. Summary Results and Standings
