Ghana smoulder Kenya in volleyball championship

Kenya’s men volleyball team’s hopes of a fine start in their African Nations Championship campaign took a huge dent after they fell in their opening Pool B match to Ghana losing by three straight sets 16-25, 24-26,16-25 at the Cairo Stadium Indoor Halls Complex, on Sunday afternoon.

The loss is a disappointment to Kenya. Favourites on paper, they were expected to easily dispatch their lower ranked opponents but they capitulated on the court.

Kenya is ranked 50th on the FIVB ranking with Ghana at 95. Prior to this meeting, the two teams had never played each other and so the clash was not only a matter of fighting for honours but bragging rights too.

Besides Kenya and Ghana, the group also consists of eight time champions, Tunisia.

The latter play late Sunday night against underdogs Libya, hoping to cement a top spot in the group.

Kenya will be hoping that Libya upset odds and beat Tunisia to have a slim chance of topping the group when they face Tunisia on Monday at 6pm.

The Sunday’s loss left Kenya fourth in the group, with Ghana first on three points. Top two teams from the four pools in the championship earn a quarter final spot.

The competition serves as qualifiers for Italy/Bulgaria FIVB World Championship.
