St. Peters’ Mumias football team head coach Patrick Fundia is confident that his boys have the stamina to lift the national trophy when school games resume.

The Rock Saints were stripped of their Western Region Under-19 football title in June 2019 after the Kakamega County Secondary School Games jury ruled that both St Peters and finalists Kibabii fielded ineligible players.

But Fundia is bullish that they are back much stronger and ready to conquer after serving their ban.

“We have already served our ban which expired in July of 2020. When the school calendar resumes to normalcy and our games come back to life, we will be aiming to lift the national trophy,” Fundia said.

The school, under the leadership of principal Cosmus Nabongolo was installed as an FKF Centre of Excellence six days ago and are planning to turn around the face of soccer in Western region according to Fundia.

“We are also targeting to discover and grow a lot of talents out there to benefit the community around us.

With the help of Football Kenya Federation, we are going to be in a position to sharpen local youthful players who will be ready to be absorbed by our top tier league clubs in the country,” he added.

Overlapping defender Omar Somombwa, an alumnus of Saint Peters was signed by AFC Leopards last year after being a revelation in the 2019 school games.

Due to the ministry of health’s covid-19 protocols, the Saints have been training in smaller groups of six before the school closed for holidays on Tuesday.

Other schools that have served their ban are Kwale Girls and Mutewa Boys of Meru.
