Kenneth Egovwa, head coach of Tigoi Girls High School basketball team in Vihiga County regrets the adverse effects Covid- 19 has had on their plans.
Prior to the outbreak of the virus, Tigoi were all but set for the regional school games which were to be held in Kakamega County.
However the pandemic not only shattered this plans but also ensured that the Games did not take place, thanks to government ban on social events as well as travel restrictions aimed at keeping the virus at bay.
“We were totally ready but health comes first. Once we get back to normalcy we will do what we normally do best even though I am a bit disappointed for our form fours who, most probably, will now not be able to be part of us,” he told Citizen Digital on Friday.
Tigoi were 2017 and 2019 bronze medallists in the national championship after clinching the Western Region titles.
The Vihiga based side have dominated the county and regional games for long, and crushed their rivals, Bunyore Girls, 97-24 to clinch the Vihiga county title.
The five times national champions don’t even recall the last time they lost a match in the county games. They won the national trophy in 1989, 1992, 2004, 2010 and 2011, underlining their credentials as a regional powerhouse. They have also won the East Africa championship in 2010 and 2011.
As the country and the world at large unites in fighting the pandemic, Egovwa advises people, especially her students to follow the government’s health guidelines and also engage in individual training.
“Players and people need to follow the guidelines, maintain social distancing, sanitize and wear masks. Hygiene is key,” he added.
