Good Friday! Mathare edge Chemelil to go top
Mathare United will spend at least 24 hours at the summit of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) standings following their 1-0 win over Chemelil Sugar on Friday.
Cliff Nyakeya’s goal at the stroke of half-time was the difference in the end as Francis Kimanzi’s men picked up their second successive win.
The result at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos took the 2008 winners to 17 points, one clear of domestic giants Gor Mahia FC and AFC Leopards who are joint-second.
Leopards, who have won four on the bounce, are not in action until Monday when travel to Tusker FC but Gor could go return to the top on Saturday when they entertain Vihiga United at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu.
The champions have a game in hand over the rest and will have less than a week to recover before taking on Supersport United in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup play-offs clash.
