Gor confident of impressive CAF show after group stage qualification

High flying Gor Mahia are confident of having a fairy-tale run in the 2019 CAF Confederations Cup after cruising to the group stage on Sunday, thanks to a 2-1 aggregate win over New Star de Douala of Cameroon.

K’Ogalo frustrated the Cameroonians to a barren draw in Limbe to earn the ticket having won the first leg in Nairobi 2-1.

Their gallant act saw them write a beautiful chapter in their rich history, becoming the only Kenyan club to have qualified for the tourney’s group stage, the second year in a row.

This brave performance has left club deputy secretary Ronald Ngala purring as they bid to make foot prints in the competition which they last won in 1987 when it was known as the Nelson Mandela Cup.

“We are waiting for the CAF draws (group stage) which will done this evening, 6pm in Cairo,” he said. “Caf will only give us half of the Ksh 27 million and will thereafter recover fines imposed on our players and TV coverage expenses. The balance will be given to us at the end of the tournament,’’ explained Ngala.

At the same time the team is expected to land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport tonight at 9.55pm and connect directly to Dar es Salaam with a 11pm flight. They’re heading to the Tanzanian capital to participate in the Super Cup tournament which kicks off on Tuesday.

According to Ngala, five more players who did not travel with the team to Cameroon, will join the team at JKIA.

“Dennis Oliech will join the team tonight alongside captain Haron Shakava, Joash Onyango, Nicholas Kipkurui and Geoffrey Ochieng,’’Ngala told Ditizen Digital.

Meanwhile, according to Ngala, attacking midfielder Kenneth Muguna has been left out  of the trip because he has so far not impressed the coach.

“He is not the Muguna who played for us in the past and you can realize he has lost his form,’ claimed Ngala.

K’Ogalo open their Super Cup campaign against Tanzanian outfit Mbao FC aiming to retain the crown with a ticket to face English Premier League side Everton on the cards for the winners.
